Body lift surgery

Occasionally overweight individuals may choose to undergo gastric bypass operations, also known as stomach stapling or stomach banding. Such an operation will create a small pouch in the patient’s stomach to decrease the amount an overweight individual eats, usually effectively causing large amounts of weight loss. After massive loss of weight, either naturally or surgically, the once overstretched skin may not be able to restore its elasticity, thus leading to unpleasing folds of skin that can hang over the abdomen, under the arms, around the thighs, or around the breasts. Increasing age can exacerbate this situation, and the body lift is a common procedure for people who are 40 to 60 although both younger and older patients can have this procedure.

So what is body lift surgery? The rising popularity of rapid weight loss surgeries and dieting regimens leads to the increasing demand of body lift procedures to remove the flabby, loose skin that can be the unpleasing souvenirs of significant loss of weight. Body lift surgery may be the ideal solution to this saggy skin that results after large amounts of weight loss, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance and a more aesthetically pleasing body.

A complete body lift operation may include tightening of the buttocks, thighs, abdomen, hips, arms, and breasts, and back. A patient can also choose to have the procedure performed on individual areas of the body. During surgical body lifts, which can take from 3 to 7 hours, the patient is first placed under general anaesthesia. There are usually three stages to such an operation. In the first two stages, the patient will be lying to one side and the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat from the hips, buttocks, thighs, and arms on either side. In the third and final stage, an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is performed when the patient is lying on the back.

The details of each stage are similar. The surgeon will remove excess fat and skin using incisions that will generally be hidden under underwear and swimwear. After the excision wounds are closed, the surgeon can use excess tissue or an upward pushing force to lift areas, such as the breasts or buttocks, as needed. Excision is often combined with liposuction for a more thorough removal of undesired fat. A surgical drain may be utilised to remove additional internal fluid that can collect in the body cavities during surgery. The patient may need to stay in the hospital for one or two days, or even longer depending on the intensity of the procedure and amount of fat and skin removed.

Additional operations may be necessary, as it may not be viable to complete the body lift in one sitting. These procedures can be completed at three-month intervals in order to improve your body shape and skin tone to the fullest. Because the body lift is an intensive surgical process, patients generally must be in good physical health and fitness and have been around the same weight for at least the past 18 months. Since most of the stitches used under the skin will be absorbable and dissolvable, there is usually no need to return to have them removed.

Before a body lift procedure, you will engage in a detailed discussion with your surgeon in the first consultations involving what exactly about your appearance you wish to change, including your expectations of the body lift. It is essential to set your appearance priorities with your surgeon, and this will facilitate the process of determining the best individualised body lift procedure for you. During the consultation, you will also receive a detailed quote of the surgery’s cost and your overall fitness, as well as medical history, will be evaluated. Your surgeon may also, in the initial or second consultation, make measurements of your body or take photographs for surgical calculations and record purposes. You will have a thorough idea of what the surgery will entail, benefits, procedures to be used, risks and complications, most likely outcome, and recovery time before you decide to undergo the operation. Since the days leading up to the surgery are crucial to the success of the procedure and a quick recovery, during the consultation, your surgeon will provide guidelines on diet, vitamin intake, medication usage, and smoking. It is essential that you follow these guidelines.

In general, those who have significant areas of loose or flabby tissue on their bodies, are physically healthy, do not smoke, have a positive yet realistic outlook for the surgery’s role in improving their appearance, and are determined to continue living a lifestyle of good nutrition and exercise will be qualified for the procedure. Smokers, those with chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes, or those with psychiatric issues may not be good candidates for a body lift operation. Overweight patients should lose any excess weight first, wait 18 months for their body weight to stabilize, and then consider a body lift if needed.

Although both men and women can undergo a body lift operation, it is highly recommended for pregnant women or those planning to be pregnant in the future to postpone the operation until after all expected pregnancies for more visible and longer lasting results. We strongly suggest that you make the most of the opportunity we present for you to discuss with our past patients who underwent our body lift procedures to learn more about their firsthand experiences.

Regardless of the fact that in virtually every case, patients are highly pleased with the results of our body lift procedures, a body lift or any form of aesthetic surgery may not necessarily make you feel better about yourself. It will certainly benefit many patients who are unsatisfied with their body by improving their self-image and increasing confidence levels, but plastic surgery is by no means an automatic remedy to fundamental emotional and psychological issues. We insist that you maintain a realistic outlook, and our team will ensure your satisfaction with our procedure and the results of your body lift.
